Sea Island is a private,
five-mile-long coastal Georgia resort island surrounded
by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and separated from St.
Simons Island by wide salt marshes on the west. It lies
halfway between Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville,
Florida and is a one-hour drive from both cities' international
airports. Just four miles away, McKinnon Airport on St.
Simons Island welcomes private aircraft and about 14 miles
away; Delta serves the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport through
its partner, Atlantic Southeast Airlines. Transportation
is readily available from all area airports.
The Sea Island Company, which
owns and operates The Cloister, The Lodge at Sea Island,
the Sea Island Golf Club, The Lodge at Cabin Bluff, Ocean
Forest Golf Club and several residential communities
on Sea Island and neighboring St. Simons Island, is in its
fourth generation of family ownership. Today, Bill Jones
III is the company's Chairman and CEO.
Created
in classic Mediterranean-style, The Cloister was first
designed by renowned Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner
in 1928. Future additions and renovations are Mizner-inspired.
The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club was created in the classic
Northeastern Hamptons style architecture by Peter Capone.
The Cloister, opened
in 1928, is a 270-room oceanfront resort. The Lodge, opened
in March 2001, is a 40-room golf resort/clubhouse. The Cloister
has undergone extensive renovations and additions, including
new luxury oceanfront accommodations. Approximately one
third of the more than 500 homes on Sea Island are available
for rental.
Three championship golf
courses, five miles of private beach, 25 Har-Tru tennis

from the beach and are cozy and comfortable. Rooms at the
new Ocean Houses are grand and spacious, featuring beautiful
views of the Atlantic Ocean or marsh. Rooms feature an array
of amenities including robes, Penhaligon's toiletries and
more.
40

situated above the clubhouse, all with views of the Atlantic
Ocean or the Plantation Course. Rooms are spacious and feature
rich wood furniture, exposed beam ceilings and hardwood
floors. All are appointed with Frette linens, Oriental rugs
and have large marble baths with deep-soaking tubs, oversized
shower heads, heated towel bars and non-fogging mirrors.
Amenities include robes, slippers, Penhaligon's toiletries
and more.
Cottages Approximately
one-third of the more than 500 homes on Sea Island are available
for rental. Called cottages by tradition, residences on
Sea Island range from modest to grand and offer from two
to seven bedrooms, many with swimming pools. Cottage renters
are invited to obtain temporary memberships in the Sea Island
Club for the length of their stay, enabling them to use
Sea Island facilities.
