The
various tabby walls and sections found around the site of
the former Hampton Plantation may be more typical of the
condition of most tabby resources. The land which once constituted
Hampton Plantation is now the site of a residential subdivision
built during the 1970s. The site contains ruins of the main
house, its kitchen, the garden, the stables, the overseer's
house, and numerous slave cabins. Hampton Planation
There
have been at least 40 archeological investigations at Fort
Frederica since the 1940's. The 21 brick and tabby ruins
of the fortified town of Frederica consist of the remains
of the burial vaults, the foundations of homes within the
town wall, the King's Magazine, and the barracks. The King's
Magazine is slightly less than half of its original size
and half of that is reconstructed. All that remains of the
barracks are its entrance tower and its foundations. Fort Frederica National Monument
The
first St. Simons Lighthouse was constructed in 1807 by James
Gould on Couper's Point. The present lighthouse (pictured)
was reconstructed in 1872 on the same site to replace the
original which was destroyed by retreating Confederate forces
in 1862. St. Simons Island Lighthouse
